SALDU, in partnership with ALI SA hosted our second policy dialogue leading up to the SA@30 conference. This policy dialogue, titled:  “The Shadow Economy and Extortion in South Africa”, featured a pivotal discussion in our ongoing efforts to address the complex challenges affecting South Africa’s economic and social fabric.

Crime, particularly extortion, continues to undermine the safety and prosperity of South African communities, destabilising businesses and deterring critical investment. Extortion networks, fueled by organised crime, create a significant barrier to sustainable economic growth and deepen the crisis of unemployment, particularly within the informal and shadow sectors.

This dialogue explored actionable strategies to address the growing threats of extortion, empower local businesses, and encourage private sector collaboration to dismantle criminal networks. Through a robust exchange of ideas, we examined the role of technology, international best practices, and the critical involvement of communities in strengthening our national response to these challenges.

Key areas of discussion included:

  • Empowering local communities and businesses to resist extortion
  • The role of the private sector in countering organized crime
  • Leveraging technology to enhance security and transparency
  • Drawing on international lessons to build a more resilient economy

Through the invaluable insights obtained during this policy dialogue we can shape solutions that not only strengthen the rule of law but also provide tangible pathways to economic empowerment for all South Africans.

Together, we can contribute to a safer, more prosperous future for our country.
