Welcome to South Africa at 30 Years of Democracy

As we commemorate three decades since the historic 1994 elections that marked the end of apartheid, South Africa stands at a crucial juncture in its democratic journey. The legacy of apartheid, characterised by systemic racial segregation and profound social inequalities, has shaped our nation’s trajectory.

While significant strides have been made, the implementation of democracy still faces challenges in addressing poverty, inequality, and governance.

SALDRU with key partners in the Presidency and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), as well as the European Commission through the EU-AFD Research Facility on Inequalities, explored these challenges at our conference from 2 to 4 April 2025, in the Kramer Law Building on UCT Middle Campus.
