United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) is implementing, together with its partners, over the period 2021- 2025, the second phase of a research programme entitled Southern Africa – Toward Inclusive Economic Development (SA-TIED phase II), with the aim of enhancing economic research, capacity development, and policy dialogue. The programme consists of six thematic workstreams, which aim to generate relevant and credible research findings to support evidence-based policymaking in South Africa. The workstream “Structural Transformation, Labour Markets, and Inequality Dynamics” aims to understand how historical, social, economic, financial, fiscal, and environmental issues contribute to South Africa being one of the most unequal societies in the world.
Under this workstream, we have been contracted to collaborate with UNU-WIDER and SA-TIED on a number of activities, including:
- Assisting the SA-TIED team in cleaning data from the South African Department of Basic Education (DBE) on National Senior Certificates, and merging it into the National Treasury Secure Data Facility (NT-SDF) data.
- Producing a technical note and co-authoring a working paper based on the DBE data.
- Assisting the National Treasury team to access other Post-school Education and Training (PSET) data to link with the NT-SDF data.
