Public Works Survey
This project explores the contribution of public works to social protection policy in South Africa, drawing evidence from two case studies, the Gundo Lashu programme in Limpopo, and the Zibambele programme in KwaZulu Natal.
Coverage: Public works programmes in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal
Description
This project explores the contribution of public works to social protection policy in South Africa, drawing evidence from two case studies, the Gundo Lashu programme in Limpopo, and the Zibambele programme in KwaZulu Natal. It attempts to provide some initial responses to the question of the targeting of public works programmes and their micro-economic and labour market impacts, thereby establishing an evidence base for future policy development, and to identify some of the key policy lessons. In both provinces, the research was implemented in partnership with provincial authorities, the KwaZulu Natal Department of Transport, and the Limpopo Roads Authority.
