Emma Whitelaw
Emma is a postdoctoral researcher at SALDRU. She received her PhD in Economics from UCT in 2023, focusing on student funding, access, and success in post-school education in South Africa. Emma has since built a research agenda at the intersection of education, labour markets, and social mobility. Her current work contributes to the Siyaphambili Initiative at SALDRU, which is hub for education information and research. This includes projects on tracing education-to-opportunity transitions in South Africa; advancing human capital and demographic projections on the African continent; and involvement in training courses in data management, interpretation and practical use.
Emma also holds an MSc in Economics and Public Policy (cum laude) from the University of York and an MA in African Languages (cum laude) from the University of Cape Town.
