UCT Energy Survey Information

Introduction

Hello, my name is _______________. I am a surveyor with J-PAL Africa. We are conducting a research study, which I invite you to take part in. This research is being done with the University of Cape Town and the University of California, Berkeley.

When we spoke with you some months ago, you agreed to participate in our survey and up to one more survey over the subsequent year. That is what we are contacting you about today.

Purpose Of The Study

Researchers from the University of Cape Town and the University of California, Berkeley are conducting a study to understand how households use energy and manage their finances in Cape Town.

Procedures

Today’s survey will last about 20 minutes and will be conducted by phone. During this survey, we will ask similar to last time, about your energy use and your finances.

Benefits

There will be no direct benefit to you from participating in this study. However, the results of this research will help to inform policies to improve the delivery of services, including electricity, in the City of Cape Town. In the long run, we hope that this research will benefit you, your family, and ultimately, your community.

Risks/Discomforts

There are minimal risks involved in this research. You may feel some discomfort in answering these questions. However, you are welcome to not answer any question you prefer not to answer. If you have any questions about this, either now or later, the researchers are available (see contact number below).

As with all research, there is a chance that confidentiality could be compromised; however, we are taking precautions to minimize this risk.

Confidentiality

All information collected from you, including spoken and written responses to questions, will be kept confidential, meaning private. Your survey information will be kept private by using an anonymous number that does not reveal your identity. Only the study investigators will have a key linking identities to these anonymous numbers, and this key will be destroyed at the end of the project. All electronic data used will be with anonymous codes only, and stored in a secure way. Your family, spouse or friends listed will not learn any of your responses to protect your privacy.

Identifiers might be removed from the identifiable private information. After such removal, the information could be used for future research studies or distributed to other investigators for future research studies without additional informed consent from the subject or the legally authorized representative.

For research purposes, we will link your survey responses to administrative data, specifically electricity and billing records, from the City of Cape Town. However, before we share the study with anyone other than the research team, your personal details will be separated from your survey responses. We do this to prevent anyone outside the research team, including the City of Cape Town, from linking your survey responses back to you.

Your personal information may be released if required by law. Authorized representatives from the following organizations may review your research data for purposes such as monitoring or managing the conduct of this study:

Compensation

As a token of appreciation for your time during the discussion, we will provide you with a small compensation, in the form of a R25 voucher that you can redeem at major shops around the city. Depending on the choices you make during the survey, you may receive some additional compensation.

Rights

Participation in research is completely voluntary. You have the right to decline to participate or to withdraw at any point in this study without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

Prosedures

Voordele

Daar is geen direkte voordeel vir u om aan hierdie studie deel te neem nie. Risiko's/Ongemak

Daar is minimale risiko's verbonde aan deelname aan hierdie navorsing. U mag ongemaklik voel wanneer u sommige van die vrae beantwoord. U is egter welkom om enige vraag wat u verkies om nie te beantwoord nie, oor te slaan. Indien u enige vrae hieroor het, hetsy nou of op 'n later stadium, is die navorsers beskikbaar om dit te beantwoord (sien kontaknommer hieronder).

Soos met alle navorsing, is daar 'n klein moontlikheid dat vertroulikheid in die gedrang kan kom. Ons tref egter voorsorgmaatreëls om hierdie risiko so ver moontlik te beperk.

Vertroulikheid

Alle inligting wat van u ingesamel word, insluitend mondelinge en skriftelike antwoorde op vrae, sal vertroulik hanteer word, wat beteken dat dit privaat gehou sal word. U opname-inligting sal privaat gehou word deur 'n anonieme nommer te gebruik wat nie u identiteit openbaar nie. Slegs die hoofnavorsers sal toegang hê tot 'n sleutel wat u identiteit aan hierdie anonieme nommers koppel, en hierdie sleutel sal aan die einde van die projek vernietig word. Alle elektroniese data sal slegs anonieme kodes bevat en op 'n veilige wyse gestoor word. Vir navorsingsdoeleindes sal ons u opname-antwoorde koppel aan administratiewe data, spesifiek elektrisiteits- en rekeningrekords van die Stad Kaapstad. Voordat die studie-inligting egter met enigiemand buite die navorsingspan gedeel word, sal u persoonlike besonderhede van u opname-antwoorde geskei word. Ons doen dit om te verhoed dat enigiemand buite die navorsingspan, insluitend die Stad Kaapstad, u opname-antwoorde met u kan verbind.
