On the 21st and 22nd of September SALDRU, together with the French Development Agency (AFD), presented a training workshop on the Youth Explorer and forthcoming Community Explorer in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga. Just over 55 participants from numerous Mpumalanga municipalities took part in the interactive workshop, entitled “Climate Change Forum: Youth and Community Explorers”. The focus was on how the Explorer portals can assist policy and intervention planning in the context of the Just Transition and the shift to a greener economy.

The sessions were engaging, with plenty of interaction between participants and facilitators. The feedback received was positive, with participants reporting on the usefulness of the tools, as well as calls to expand the training offered. The team also received useful user feedback about how the portals can be improved with respect to functionality as well as the data presented to support both policy planning and reporting.

We thank the hosts, the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land & Environmental Affairs, for the opportunity to introduce the Explorers to policy makers on the ground.

More about the Community Explorer:

The Community Explorer expands on the existing Youth Explorer by adding a series of indicators specific to children (0-17), the working age population (15-64) and older persons (60+) alongside the youth specific indicators. As such, it provides an overview of the full population at various geographical levels. A preliminary version of the portal is available here, currently presenting indicators down to the municipal level only. Further updates will be released as soon as Census 2011 small area level data has been analysed for the full population, as well as down to main place and ward levels. When the Census 2022 data become available, indicators for all age groups will be recalculated and a comparison over time will be added. The portal already adds a number of exciting new functionalities such as the comparison view, as well as new data, including the NT-SARS based labour market indicators for youth.

The expansion of the Youth Explorer to the Community Explorer is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD).
