SALDRU had a very strong presence at the AIDSImpact Conference, which was held in Casablanca from the 26th to the 28th of May, 2025. AIDSImpact is an international behavioural and psychosocial science conference that addresses issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care, focusing both globally and on specific communities and countries hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Dr Brendan Maughan-Brown presented five oral presentations and chaired a session. Two of his presentations reported findings from studies of interventions to improve HIV treatment outcomes:

  • “It gives you time to understand how you take your pills”: Insights on an HIV treatment adherence scratch card to support adherence in South Africa.
  • Insights on a video-based psychosocial support intervention to improve HIV treatment uptake and psychosocial well-being among men in South Africa.

He also presented findings from formative work to inform the development of an intervention based on psychological inoculation theory, which aims to generate resistance to misinformation about the HIV vaccine:

  • Characterising HIV vaccine concerns and misinformation claims from literature.
  • Understanding HIV vaccine misinformation and vaccine intentions among young women in South Africa: insights from an online survey.

His final presentation described results from an analysis to understand gender norms among young men and how these influence sexual and reproductive health outcomes:

  • Beyond Behaviour: How gender inequitable attitudes shape HIV risks for young men in Eastern and Southern Africa.
